Amazing Grace – Part One – Swami Sadasivananda

This satsang is the first of three sections of a long talk that was held with devotees of the Sri Ramana Maharshi. The discussion centered on the life, writings and revelations of Divine Grace that came forth from Sri Muruganar, one of the foremost disciples of Sri Ramana Maharshi. Since the members of this devoted satsang group are sincere practitioners of the teachings of the Maharshi, the talk centered on how we all, as seekers of that same Divine Grace, may find and imbue within ourselves the Grace-filled Nectar of the revelation of the Self – The Immaculate Beloved!

Judith Ragir Zen Priest – 12-Step Audio Lectures

These lectures were recorded at Minnesota Zen Meditation Center in an effort to bring together 12-Step recovery work, Buddhism and meditation. My mission, as stated often in the lectures or at the beginning of the meeting is:

1) To help people understand how to meditate, encourage daily meditation and give support for sustaining a practice once established.

2) To help make the translation from a mainly Christian-based language in the 12-Steps to the
non-theistic language of Buddhism. The main principle of Buddhism are interwoven and mirrored in the Steps. We can discern and explore where specific Buddhist practices fall into the organization of the Steps.

For thirty years, I have practiced Buddhism and the
12-Steps, side-by-side, with profound results. Each community could learn from one another. From my point of view, American Buddhists can enrich their understanding of sangha and the dismantling of destructive patterns from Steps 4 through 9 as practiced in Recovery.

The Recovery community can learn much from mindfulness practice and meditation that is such a rich treasure in Buddhism. Combined, they provide an unshakable transformative process for us all.

According to Buddhists, karma, or the law of cause and effect, is the true creator of our world. Anytime we act, speak or think, we create karma and that karma eventually ripens into painful, pleasurable or neutral experience for us, depending on the action. The Buddha described reality in terms of dependent arising- that phenomena arise only in dependence upon other causes and conditions. Understanding how these two concepts interrelate can completely change our life.

The wisdom of emptiness is the ultimate teaching in Buddhism; its main tenet is that our suffering is caused by our inability to perceive the true nature of reality.

These teachings on emptiness are very subtle, profound and deeply transforming, Yet with correct understanding, we can shift our experience of the world.

In this course, we’ll begin to explore these ideas through meditation, understanding the process of attaining the wisdom understanding emptiness and practice some of the purification techniques to clear the obstacles to realization of emptiness.

Although there is no required pre-requisite for this class, it’s best if students have attended at least one other Discovering Buddhism class or the equivalent.

Beginner/Intermediate.

“All human accomplishment is preceded by correct cognition.”

Mind and Mental Process (Lo Rig in Tibetan) begins with the study of mind, both in its valid and distorted forms along with the relationship between subject and object, and between thought and reality. The second part of the class introduces us to Buddhist psychology, where we’ll study the various positive & negative emotions as well as the cognitive states relevant to practice on a path to liberation. The teachings of Lo-Rig explain what the mind is and how it works.

All levels. This workshop/retreat will specifically focus on the 7-Point Mind training by Geshe Chekawa. Its practical application is enormous, and it is radical in that it has the power to completely transform our lives into a tool for awakening our minds and learning to benefit others. This is the perfect workshop for people who are trying to figure out how to integrate the Buddhist teachings into crazy urban life in the 21st century. This course includes instructions in tonglen, a simple breathing meditation technique thats purpose is to alleviate the physical and emotional suffering of ourselves and others.

Eightfold Path
A Gnostic explanation of the Eightfold Path of the Buddha.
(You can click on the left arrow to listen to the audio, or you can click on the blue link title of the audio lecture to download)

1. Suffering and Right View
The three primary types of suffering and the basis upon which they can be overcome: the correct understanding of the Absolute, the Emptiness.

“It is through not understanding, not realizing four things, that I, disciples, as well as you, had to wander so long through this round of rebirths. And what are these four things? They are the Noble Truth of Suffering, the Noble Truth of the Origin of Suffering, the Noble Truth of the Extinction of Suffering, and the Noble Truth of the Path that leads to the extinction of suffering.” – Buddha Shakyamuni

2. Right Intention
How to act properly while on the Eightfold Path.

3. Right Speech
The use of the sacred word as part of the Eightfold Path to Self-realization.

“Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!” – James 3

4. Right Action or Thelema: Willpower
The importance and use of willpower in any spiritual discipline. Part of the Eightfold Path.

5. Right Livelihood: Vocation
Find your mission in life: your true work.

6. Right Effort
This lecture is missing for the archives.

7. Right Mindfulness
A practical introduction to mindfulness, awareness, attention, consciousness, self-observation and Self-remembering.

8. Why Meditate
The goal of every religion is the union of the human consciousness with divinity. The technique that facilitates this union is a very precise use of the consciousness. Through activating and directing our consciousness in the right way, we can open the doors to its roots, which are beyond the mind, emotion, and the body. This is why meditation, or the technique of conscious self-reflection, is the primary action of spiritual development.

“The technique of meditation allows us to arrive at the heights of illumination.” -Samael Aun Weor

Lecture Quote:

“The Eightfold Path is a path that can be only seen by the inner sight, or “insight.” This path is not a path that you can see outside, it is a path that is inside of us. This is why Buddhism emphasizes the technique of meditation. When you think about Buddhism, the first image that comes to mind is the Buddha in a state of meditation, with his eyes slightly opened and contemplating himself. When we talk about Buddhism, immediately we associate it with meditation. And actually, different techniques of meditation are taught in Buddhism. In Gnosticism, we know that Buddha is an entity or part which is within each one of us, that we call the Innermost.”
